THE Higginson Highway has been closed off from Bayview to Mobeni Heights after armed hijackers, who were being chased by police, crashed into a vehicle, causing carnage along the highway earlier today.

In a secondary crash, a truck’s brakes had allegedly failed while the driver was approaching the accident scene involving the hijackers.

“The Higginson Highway (M1) is completely closed to traffic in both directions. It is alleged that police were chasing alleged criminals (hijackers) who lost control of the vehicle and crashed into multiple vehicles," said Denzil Govender, the spokesperson for Ground Zero Search and Rescue.

“A few metres away, a truck collided with five other vehicles, causing chaos along the highway. One of the crashed vehicles veered onto the M1 westbound. Therefore, both sides of the highway are partially closed. Bayview police are on scene and our members are dealing with the closures and diversions."

Sivan Subramodey, the spokesperson for Amawele Emergency Services, and Garrith Jamieson, from ALS Paramedics, said they were on scene and working to stabilise multiple patients.

Subramodey said one person was trapped in a vehicle and he was extricated after about 15 minutes.

Govender said the Higginson Highway was closed off at Bayview, and traffic was being diverted to Lenny Naidu Drive.

He said the highway was also closed off at Mobeni Heights and traffic was being diverted through the inner roads.
