The Atrium mall in Overport has conveyed its condolences to the family of a man who died after the cherry picker he was driving during after-hours maintenance work overturned, ejecting him on Wednesday.
"The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities and is currently under investigation. We are cooperating fully with all parties involved to ensure the necessary processes are followed. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family and loved ones affected during this incredibly difficult time," said The Atrium in a statement today on its social media page.
Garrith Jamieson, the spokesperson for ALS Paramedics Medical Services, said they responded to the incident just after 5pm.
“Paramedics arrived on scene to find that a cherry picker, while being offloaded, somehow overturned and ejected the driver. Paramedics assessed the man believed to be in his thirties. However, he sustained major fatal injuries and unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for him. "He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Jamieson.
He said the exact events leading up to the incident were unknown and that the South African Police Service would investigate.
