POLICE arrested three suspects - who were allegedly operating a car theft syndicate and wanted for hijackings around Durban - after they crashed into a motorist while trying to flee along the Higginson Highway earlier today.
The suspected hijackers allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on into a vehicle travelling on the oncoming lane of the highway.
“The driver of the vehicle that the suspected hijackers crashed into remains in a critical condition after sustaining serious injuries," said Andreas Mathios, the spokesperson for Marshall Security.
"The suspects were wanted for outstanding investigations relating to hijackings and a car theft syndicate operating in the Durban area. The gang was being chased by Marshall Security, together with Isipingo SAPS Trio Crimes Unit, ET Rapid Response, Tracker Connect and Fidelity SIU. Two guns, car theft tools, a signal jammer and a police radio were found in the car."
Police closed both lanes of the highway to conduct investigations.
A few minutes after the accident involving the suspected hijackers, a truck crashed into about six vehicles, causing further carnage along the highway.
The truck allegedly lost its brakes while heading downhill from the Higginson Highway towards Havenside.
Mathios said they were still on the highway and traffic was backed up. He urged motorists to be patient.
Claude Subramodey, spokesperson for Amawele Emergency Services, said three women and three men were treated for moderate to serious injuries in the truck collision.
