THE Tongaat Panthers Athletic Club (TPAC) will host a Memorial Walk on Sunday to pay tribute to its members who have passed away, celebrating the lives and lasting impact of athletes who helped shape the club and the wider community.

The 5km walk will begin from Mitchford Primary School. Family members of the late athletes will light candles in their honour.

In a show of solidarity, a virtual walk option will allow family and friends across the globe to participate simultaneously in their respective locations, joining the tribute remotely.

Founded 32 years ago, TPAC has built a strong reputation in Tongaat for its commitment to excellence, camaraderie and community upliftment. The Memorial Walk reflects the club’s caring ethos, one that ensures members are remembered and celebrated even after they are gone.

TPAC chairperson Lajeeth Maharaj said the initiative was inspired by the club’s executive committee and aimed to send a powerful message of support to grieving families.

“We arranged this memorial walk to honour the memories of our members who passed on and to send a message to the loved ones and families, that we still care for and cherish the memories of our past members.

“Tongaat Panthers and the sport of road running and walking was a huge part of the lives of not only the member but also the families and friends of the member who has passed. All Tongaat Panther family members are connected to each other by our club and sport, and getting them together in one inclusive event will give families a shared experience of warmth and love and reflections of great memories and achievements,” said Maharaj.

He added that the walk was also intended to inspire current and future athletes.

“We are doing this walk to send a message to families that their loved ones’ memories still inspire and encourage current and future athletes to achieve. We are also having an interfaith prayer to encourage respect and inclusivity for all."

About 150 current members and around 30 families of past members are expected to attend. Special guests and community leaders have also been invited.

Maharaj described the memorial as a milestone moment for the club.

“We are tremendously excited at this first ever event in our history as a club. This may just be the first ever event in KZN. The Tongaat Panthers family will always remember our members who have passed on. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating their lives and achievements."

The event is supported by several community organisations, including the Tongaat Civic Association, Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society, Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum, Tonver, Tongaat Football Association, Tongaat Cricket Club and the Tongaat Sports Council.

The Memorial Walk is open to the public. For more information, contact Bear Pillay on 071 961 1519.
