THE South African Sociological Association (Sasa) has expressed 'deep concern' over comments allegedly made by Professor Srilata Roy, the head of the sociology department at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), labelling the comments classist, racist, and xenophobic.
The remarks, made on her personal X account on February 19, sparked outrage across the academic community and beyond.
The controversy erupted after Roy, who is originally from India, responded to a discussion regarding foreign nationals in South African universities.
"South Africans have little ambition, are complacent and have a poor work ethic," she reportedly posted.
Professor Srilata Roy has sparked outrage for allegedly referring to South Africans as lazy.

Sasa insisted that her statements contradict both their constitutional by-laws and the principles of South African higher education.
"Sasa is committed to a democratic South Africa, where all enjoy economic, political and social justice and freedom from all forms of discrimination based on religion, nationality, race and gender."
Wits also issued a statement on the controversy, and said it had "noted with deep concern the recent comments made by Roy on her personal X (Twitter), which have since been deleted."
In the statement, the university said that it had received multiple complaints related to the post and was taking the matter seriously.
Roy shared an apology, which she subsequently deleted. Sasa criticised the retraction.
"We have noted her retraction without genuine apology on X and see it as lacking rigour, emotion and cause, and as an attempt at face-saving which has rightfully been seen with contempt by the South African academic community and beyond."
Wits affirmed its handling of the issue.
"The university takes seriously allegations of prejudice, discrimination or racism, and alleged conduct that may undermine or compromise the university's values, policies and commitment to equality, dignity and non-discrimination."
The university also stressed that due process is being followed.
"Wits is addressing this matter directly with Prof Roy, in accordance with the University's rules, policies and procedures, and the relevant and due processes will ensue."
However, Sasa demanded that she step down from the Wits Local Organising Committee and all conference-related responsibilities.
"All forms of discrimination (racism and classism) will not be tolerated, that freedom of speech encapsulates responsibility and that contravening constitutional and humanitarian ethics and principles entail accountability and recourse," the organisation added.
