THE Imam Husain (a.s) Mosque (IHM) in Ottawa, north of Durban, held a mourning programme for the martyrdom of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, last night as part of its salatul magribain (evening prayer).

Ali Khamenei was killed during a joint US-Israeli strike that hit targets throughout the country.

In a statement, Al-Haj Azad Seedat, the provincial coordinator of the mosque in KwaZulu-Natal, said February 28, coinciding with 10th Ramadaan 1447 AH,  witnessed the "darkest day" in modern history when "the most wretched of people of our time dared to kill Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei, the vanguard of justice and the oppressed masses of the world".

"Having single handedly led the Islamic Revolution since the demise of Imam Khomeini in 1989, martyrdom is the most appropriate end for Ayatollah Khamenei.

"Imam Husain (as) Mosque expresses its extreme sorrow and deepest condolences to the great nation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to its leadership, to all the Ulama, to the Axis of Resistance and the oppressed throughout the world."

Seedat said that losing even the best of leadership would not prevent the movement against the hegemony of the Western imperialist powers from being challenged.

"IHM firmly believes that this martyrdom will water the seeds of revolution of the next generation."
