AN OFF-DUTY metro police colonel survived a second hit on his life after two armed men wearing balaclavas shot him while he was seated in his vehicle in Pinetown last night.
“This was not the first attempt on the officer’s life. For security reasons, his identity cannot be disclosed," said Colonel Boysie Zungu, spokesperson for the Durban Metro Police.
“Metro police can confirm that the officer, who holds the rank of colonel in the central region, was shot on March 2 at about 8.30pm in Payne Street in Pinetown. At this stage, the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are unknown. The matter is currently under investigation."
Zungu said the officer was not on duty at the time and it was unclear whether the attack related to his official duties.
He said a case was being investigated by police, and no arrests had been made.
“The suspects fled the scene, and available footage has been handed over to the investigating officer for further analysis."
According to a report from a community crime watch group shortly after the shooting, a resident claimed the officer was seated in his vehicle when he was shot. The resident said a white Hyundai i20 with rear-end damage stopped near where the officer was parked. He said two men in balaclavas shot at the officer with AK-47s while the vehicle's driver waited inside.
Police have not confirmed this.
