MESSAGES of condolences have poured in for a Pietermaritzburg mother and her daughter, who were allegedly attacked and killed in their home on Tuesday night.

It is alleged that Christina “Nikki” Joseph, 34, was repeatedly stabbed and Brooklyn Hemmero, 15, a Grade 10 pupil at Heather Secondary School, was strangled in their flat in Woodlands.

According to a source, the suspect allegedly strangled Brooklyn and her mother found her body when she returned from work.

“It is alleged that the suspect, who is believed to be known to the mother and daughter, thereafter stabbed Christina several times. It is further alleged that the suspect then tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the neck. But he survived and is under police guard in hospital," said the source.

The provincial police did not comment at the time of publishing.

Garth Middleton, DA ward 32 councillor in Msunduzi, said he, together with the community, are saddened by the “tragic, senseless killings”.

“I strongly condemn gender-based violence in any shape or form. I implore the lawful authorities to act swiftly but efficiently with the investigation so swift, appropriate justice is served on the perpetrator. My deepest condolences to the family. May their beautiful, innocent souls rest in peace.”

In a Facebook post, Heather Secondary School wrote: “Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved her. We remember Brooklyn for her bright spirit and the joy she brought to our school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who are grieving her passing, and we stand together in this difficult time, supporting one another with love and remembrance. May Brooklyn’s memory inspire us to cherish every moment and to support each other with kindness.”
