ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they received multiple calls to respond to gunshots and an explosion at around 5:30am.
“Paramedics arrived together with police to find it was an alleged CIT robbery where both security vehicles were shot multiple times before the vehicle was apparently bombed in the process.
“Paramedics assessed the scene and found two officers having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. One of the officers was in a critical condition. It was immediately decided to call in the Netcare 911 medical helicopter to rapidly transport the critically injured security official to a nearby hospital.
“The second security officer sustained serious gunshot wounds and was stabilised on scene by advanced life support paramedics before being transported to nearby hospital,” added Jamieson.
He said the N2 southbound has been closed and will be closed off for some time to allow investigators to investigate the incident.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Jamieson said motorists should expect delays when travelling this morning.
