DRESSED as a Muslim woman in a niqab, a Gauteng teacher appeared in court after allegedly administering 92 lashes to a Grade 11 pupil for exceeding an essay word limit. The incident has sparked outrage and is currently under investigation.

During her court appearance, Mpho Ramapatsi wore a niqab and only showed her eyes.

A niqab is a veil worn by Muslim women that covers the face, leaving the eyes exposed

Ramapatsi made a brief appearance in the Protea Magistrate’s Court where she is facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The teacher who is accused of assaulting a Grade 11 pupil at Tetelo Secondary School in Protea North, Soweto, was released on R2, 000 bail on Wednesday.

The incident has sparked outrage and is currently under investigation.

It's alleged that Ramapatsi used a pipe to administer 92 lashes to a 16-year-old pupil. The incident reportedly occurred after the pupil exceeded the required word count in an essay assignment.

The court heard that the pupil had been instructed to write a 150-word essay but submitted 308 words. Ramapatsi is accused of punishing the pupil by delivering one lash for every additional word written beyond the prescribed limit.

The incident remains under investigation, with Ramapatsi scheduled to return to court on April 8, 2026.
