Following a tragic accident involving a scholar transport vehicle that resulted in a child's death, Siboniso Duma, the KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, called on the taxi driver involved to immediately surrender to the police

Fourteen other children were injured when the scholar transport taxi overturned on Wednesday afternoon in the Mount Moriah area, north of Durban.

According to Duma, the driver fled the scene after the crash and authorities are now seeking him.

“We are calling upon the driver, who has since disappeared, to hand himself over to the police,” Duma said.

The MEC said a department team had been assigned to visit the injured children and their families at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

“I sympathise with the families of the injured children and the family of the child who passed away,” Duma said.

He added that officials have also spoken to the owner of the taxi involved in the crash.

“Our team has met with the taxi owner who said the driver told him that the brakes had failed, which caused the taxi to lose control."

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
