An elderly Phoenix couple was violently attacked by an intruder who broke into their home on Thursday while they were doing their morning chores.
Gareth Naidoo, the spokesperson for KZN VIP Emergency Services, said the suspect forced open a gate, attacked the couple and ransacked their home.
“An undisclosed amount of valuables was stolen during the incident before the suspect fled the scene. A resident in the area managed to provide us with a partial image of the alleged suspect, which may assist with further investigations,” said Naidoo.
He said the couple, from Longcroft, were treated at the scene by KZN VIP medics and transported to a medical facility for further attention.
Naidoo urged elderly residents to remain vigilant, and warned them not to confront suspects if they become victims of house robberies.
“In the event of a home invasion, it is often safer to secure yourself in a locked room if possible and avoid confrontation, as suspects may be armed and dangerous. We urge those with information regarding the elderly couple’s robbery and assault to contact authorities."
Val Pillay, the spokesperson for the Phoenix Community Policing Forum (CPF), said: “Incidents of this nature are deeply concerning, particularly when criminals target vulnerable members of our community. The CPF would like to remind residents that vigilance and proactive safety measures remain critical in helping to reduce the risk of such crimes.
“Residents need to ensure that all gates, doors, and security barriers are properly secured at all times, even during the day. They should consider installing additional security measures such as alarm systems, outdoor lighting, and CCTV cameras where possible.
“We also warn elderly residents against opening gates or doors for unknown individuals without verifying their identity. If they suspect someone has entered their property unlawfully, they must prioritise their safety by moving to a secure room if possible and contacting security services or the police immediately."
She said one must avoid confronting a suspect directly, as they may be armed and dangerous.
"Fellow residents must look out for their elderly neighbours and report suspicious activity in their areas. The CPF also encourages the community to strengthen neighbourhood communication through street groups and community safety structures, as timely information sharing can assist in preventing crime and identifying suspects.
“We commend the resident who assisted by providing a partial image of the suspect, which may aid investigators. Anyone with additional information that could assist law enforcement is urged to come forward and contact SAPS or their local community safety structures."
Pillay wished the couple a speedy recovery.
