A KWAZULU-NATAL man’s fun night out took a turn for the worse when his girlfriend allegedly stole his car for a cigarette run, leading to a dramatic crash and her arrest.

The two had booked into a hotel in La Mercy on Friday night, but when the boyfriend went to the bathroom on Saturday morning, she snuck out in his silver Toyota Corolla.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the Toyota owner immediately called the security company to report that the car had been taken without his permission.

After launching a search for the vehicle, RUSA members were directed to an accident scene near Trenance Park, which is about 15km away from La Mercy.

Interestingly, the unlicensed girlfriend drove all that way just to buy a packet of cigarettes - or at least that’s what she told officers after putting the vehicle on its side on Inanda Road.

Not only did she cause extensive damage to the car, but she also managed to damage the structure of a house that she crashed into.

According to RUSA, the uninjured woman was placed under arrest by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“The female informed officers that she had taken the vehicle to purchase cigarettes. She stated that she had travelled to Trenance Park and was returning to La Mercy - KZN when she lost control of the vehicle,” RUSA said in a statement.
