A Chatsworth teenager was seriously injured after fleeing from two dogs that chased him into oncoming traffic while he was walking to school.
The 17-year-old was walking to Newhaven Secondary School and was chased by the dogs along Silverglen Drive on Wednesday morning. The dogs were believed to be pets that had escaped from their homes.
Claude Subramodey, the spokesperson for Amawele Emergency Services, said that when paramedics arrived they found the teenager lying on the road with serious head injuries.
He said the boy was transported to the hospital.
Vish Mudaly, chairperson of the Silverglen Community Policing Forum, said they would clamp down on irresponsible dog owners.
“We are concerned that a child going to school had sustained serious injuries due to negligent and irresponsible dog owners after he escaped being bitten by the dogs and ran into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
“The owner of the dogs needs to be brought to task. We will be investigating the incident and we will ensure that the pet owners face the consequences. We will act on this before someone loses their life."
Mudaly said the CPF urged pet owners to ensure their pets are locked in their yards to avoid them posing a risk to schoolchildren. He said they also urged motorists to drive cautiously, especially around the schools in the community.
