The 19th annual South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) will be held today and tomorrow at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg, recognising exceptional talent across the nation’s entertainment sector.

Among the nominees, reality show fans are buzzing about the recognition of two prominent productions: The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice, up for Best Structured Soapie Reality Show, and the ever-engaging The Devi Show, which garnered nominations for Best Factual Show and Best Presenter for its host, Devi Sankaree Govender.

The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice provides an intimate look into the lives of affluent mothers from Durban's Indian community, showcasing the highs and lows of their daily experiences.

The ensemble cast, comprising twins Resh and Losh Naidoo, Abigail Nepaul, Asharia Parsad, Christina Devraj, Devina Kowlas, Kim Jones, Lenore Goss-Matjie, and Neetasha Singh Bugwandin, has quickly resonated with audiences, making the show a beloved staple on South African screens.

Resh Naidoo, an occupational therapist and mother of two, said being nominated for a Safta for the show was "truly an incredible honour".

"The show has been such a powerful platform to celebrate the lives of strong, dynamic women who balance motherhood, business, family and culture. To see our story recognised by the Saftas is both humbling and deeply affirming for all of us who were part of bringing this show to life.

"For me personally, being on The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice was about more than just reality television. It was an opportunity to share my authentic journey as a mother, occupational therapist, entrepreneur and proud South African woman of Indian heritage. The show highlights the beauty of our culture, our resilience as women, and the many roles we juggle every day."

She said it had been inspiring to see how audiences have connected with their stories and the conversations the show had sparked around motherhood, ambition and sisterhood.

"We are also incredibly proud of the amazingly talented production team we had the privilege of working with, Media24 and POP24, whose vision and dedication brought the show to life. This nomination celebrates not only the show, but the powerful stories of South African women that deserve to be seen and heard."

The other nominees in the category are Beaulah Queens van die Kaap as well as Young, Famous and African (S2).

In 2020, Govender launched The Devi Show on e.tv and eNCA. The series won the Safta for Best Factual Programme in 2021, and she also won the Presenter of the Year award in 2024.

Regarding the nomination for Best Factual Show, the investigative journalist with over three decades of bold reporting, said: "The Devi Show turns 6 in a few months. Kicking off in a pandemic, the team has battled the odds of a new show, navigating a tough landscape for broadcast television. We give gratitude to eMedia, eTV, eNCA and our fabulous audience who tuned in since Day 1."

She said the Best Presenter category was "really tough" and relied on public votes.

"I am thrilled to have been nominated again. Win or not, I will keep on fighting the good fight... in takkies!"

Ten other presenters are in this category.

The SAFTAs Craft and Main Show Awards, themed: One Story. One Industry.
