KEITH Govender, a 22-year-old tragically stabbed during a friendly game of thunee, has left a community in mourning.

As family and friends prepare for his funeral, calls for justice and for his alleged killer to be brought to book resonate throughout the community.

Keith’s funeral is expected to take place on Sunday.

His cousin, Nicole Boodhun, said Keith unfortunately picked up an infection earlier this week and was placed back on a ventilator at RK Khan Hospital.

He was transferred earlier this month from Chatsmed Gardens Hospital.

Close friend Kaydin Pillay, who was present during the violent altercation, said he was still struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“I am not sure where to start, it is still so unbelievable. I cannot believe he is really gone, it has not registered for me as yet. I keep thinking of ways I could have helped create a different outcome. Maybe if I was quicker to the hospital. I have been overthinking everything from that day.

“I really am going to miss him, Keith was a brother to me. I will miss our pool games, his lingo and jokes. I wish it did not have to be this way. No one deserves this over a card game. I hope justice takes its place and this case does not get overlooked just like countless others in our justice system. We will continue fighting for Keith. His killer must pay for taking his life,” said Pillay.

Local organisations have also expressed their sadness following the young man’s passing.

Westcliff City Football Club, where Govender previously played, shared a message of condolence.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former Westcliff City F.C. player Keith Jeremiah. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time. May his memory live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Rest in peace, Keith,” the club said.

Denzil Govender from Ground Zero Search and Rescue said the tragedy has deeply affected the wider community.

“Our thoughts are with the family of Keith Jeremiah Govender as the public mourns his passing. Keith's untimely death has prompted calls for harsher punishment, with his father advocating for life imprisonment. The tragic outcome serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of senseless violence and the devastating impact it can have on families. Our deepest condolences go out to the grieving loved ones of Keith Govender during this difficult time,” he said.

Sunrise FM also extended its sympathies to Govender’s family.

“The Sunrise FM family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Keith Jeremiah Govender. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Govender family, his loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time.
