DEBUT author Dr Guru Kistnasamy aims to address psychosocial issues and empower people with knowledge and inspiration through his book, The Guru Guide.

Kistnasamy, 78, of Silverglen in Chatsworth, said the 300-page non-fiction book was a compilation of his published articles.

“I have written columns for the POST and the Rising Sun for more than 10 years on various psychosocial issues. My family and friends have always encouraged me to write a reference book for people facing a specific issue. They would have a guide. I started gathering my articles around October last year and completed the book in early March.”

Kistnasamy, a psychologist, said the book comprises several chapters that focussed on various topics.

“Many topics are based on experiences with patients. This includes, among others, dealing with children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or have learning issues, relationship problems such as between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, mental health, and gender-based violence (GBV), especially focusing on child protection.”

Kistnasamy said the book aimed to empower the community.

“I want to inspire women who have been victims of GBV and feel disempowered. I want to encourage them through my writings, and the community at large to take control of their lives.”

Kistnasamy added that he intended to write a fiction book in the future.

“The book will be based on issues faced in the community, and how the characters overcome them. My aim is to inspire and empower people.”

The book will launch at the uMhlanga Book Fair at the uMhlanga Apart-Hotel on March 22 from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. It will also launch at the Nelson Mandela Youth Centre in Chatsworth on March 29 at 11am.

The book will be available for purchase at the launches and on the website, www.madeindurban.co.za
