The three suspected hijackers were killed in a shoot-out with the Hawks in Crystal Park, Benoni, in the early hours of Thursday.
Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said officers had received intelligence about suspects allegedly involved in hijackings and kidnappings along Elm Road in Crystal Park.
"Members conducted a tactical patrol in the area and, at about 20:30, spotted a vehicle matching the description - a silver-grey Opel Astra - shortly after the suspects had allegedly pulled a female victim from her Fiat and forced her into their getaway car."
She said a high-speed chase ensued, during which the suspects opened fire on police.
“The suspects’ vehicle hit a roadside barrier and crashed into an embankment,” Mogale said.
“In the aftermath, three suspects were fatally wounded, and the victim was rescued unharmed.”
Police recovered two firearms and some of the victim’s belongings from the suspects’ vehicle.
