Muhammad Naasir Sheriff received the Vice-Chancellor's Circle of Excellence Award from UKZN for his exceptional achievement in the 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations.

The 17-year-old of Phoenix, was one of the 20 students who received the award during a ceremony held at UKZN's Westville campus on Monday.

Sheriff is currently a first year BCom accounting student at the university.

"Receiving this award is an incredible honour. I am truly grateful and humbled by the recognition. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication I have put in, and it motivates me to continue striving for excellence,” he said.

Sheriff, who attended Phoenix Muslim School, achieved a Bachelor's Pass with seven distinctions, and scooped the dux award.

He said his goal was to pursue a career as a chartered accountant.

“I chose to study Bcom accounting as I have always been drawn to numbers and problem-solving.” I am driven by ambition and I enjoy the challenge that comes with it. Furthermore, it is a very versatile role as you can go into tax, auditing and so much more, accompanied by many job opportunities on a global scale.”

His words of inspiration to the matric class of 2026 were, “You got this”.

“I was in their position last year, and what I learned was that consistency beats cramming, rest is part of the strategy, and you don't have to do it alone - ask for help when you need it.

“Furthermore, challenges will come, but your resilience is what will drive you forward. My advice is to stay focused, keep pushing, and trust the process. You are capable of achieving your goals,” he said.
