IN A SUCCESSFUL operation, the Durban Metro Police Tracing Unit, in collaboration with Crime Intelligence, arrested a suspect in Tongaat and recovered multiple unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Acting on information, police arrested the suspected alleged to be involved in the hiring out of firearms and ammunition to criminal elements in and around Tongaat.
Metro police said the suspect’s movements had been under observation since December 2025.
On Friday, operational members proceeded to the identified area and, with the assistance of Crime Intelligence, intercepted the suspect’s vehicle along Railway Street, opposite Shoprite.
During search of the suspect and his vehicle, one 38 Special revolver and six live rounds were found in the suspect’s possession.
The suspect failed to produce a valid licence at the time and led members to his residence, where further searches were conducted.
Additional firearms, including a 303 rifle and a shotgun with defaced serial numbers, were recovered along with a significant quantity of ammunition of various calibres.
The firearm safe on the premises was found to be non-compliant, unsecured, and without a key.
A total of three firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition were seized and booked into the SAP13 register, metro police said.
The suspect was arrested and charged for unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms, unlawful possession of ammunition, and contravention of the Firearms Control Act.
This successful operation was led by the Durban Metro Police Tracing Unit, Crime Intelligence and SAPS Ndwedwe.
