A Phoenix teenager who was shot in an attempted hit, in Eastbury, is in a critical condition in hospital.
Gareth Naidoo, spokesperson for KZN VIP Emergency Services, said reports indicated that a white VW Polo entered the Eastbury Complex, on Thursday.
He said one suspect allegedly exited the vehicle and approached the teenager.
“Multiple shots were fired in his direction. The suspects then fled the scene.
“The injured male was transported by family members to a nearby medical facility for medical attention. The circumstances leading up to the incident cannot be confirmed at this stage and remain under investigation by SAPS,” Naidoo said.
Val Pillay, spokesperson for the Phoenix Community Policing Forum (CPF) said they were concerned about the incident.
“We strongly condemn this senseless act of violence that continues to place innocent lives at risk and destabilise our communities. At this stage, we acknowledge that the full circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the police and we urge the public to allow law enforcement the necessary space to conduct a thorough investigation.
“In light of this incident, the CPF calls on all residents to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect themselves,” she added.
Pillay said residents should be alert to suspicious vehicles, especially those entering residential complexes without clear purpose.
She urged residents to report any unusual activity immediately to police or their local security structures.
“Avoid confronting suspects and prioritise personal safety at all times. Ensure access control measures in complexes are strictly enforced.
“We emphasise that crime prevention is a shared responsibility. Strong partnerships between residents, private security, CPF structures, and the police are essential in addressing violent crime,” added Pillay.
She said residents are encouraged to participate in community safety structures, and share credible information with authorities.
“Acts of violence such as drive-by shootings and hits have no place in our communities. We call on residents to stand united, remain vigilant, and work closely with law enforcement to root out crime. We urge those with information to contact the police and give them the evidence,” Pillay added.
