Correctional officials and police have confiscated cellphones, drugs, cash, routers, digital accessories, sharp objects, and other illegal items during a surprise search at the Pollsmoor Correctional Facility in Cape Town.

Led by Department of Correctional Services (DCS) National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, officials searched the Cape Town prison, one of South Africa’s five largest correctional facilities on Saturday.

Thobakgale said that these items are often smuggled into correctional facilities through visitors, during inmates’ court appearances and hospital visits, and, in some instances, with the involvement of officials.
