Hailing from the Magazine Barracks community, Uncle John’s journey is marked by both triumph and tribulation.

Like many others, his life was uprooted by the cruel policies of apartheid, which bulldozed his community in the 1960s including one of the oldest Hindu temples in the country, the original Magazine Barracks Shri Vishnu Temple built in the 1870s.

However, from the ashes of displacement emerged a beacon of hope and service in Uncle John, also known as Appa among his congregation, neighbours, and admirers.

Throughout the decades, Uncle John has remained a steadfast pillar of strength for his community. As a prayer leader, priest, and mentor, his wisdom and guidance have touched countless lives, shaping the social fabric of Chatsworth and communities as far afield as Tongaat.

His commitment to uplifting the younger generation speaks volumes about his character and dedication to keeping culture and faith traditions alive.
