A father from the Northern Cape was sentenced in the De Aar Regional Court on Thursday to 30 years’ imprisonment for raping his biological daughter.
The father cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, who is a minor.
According to evidence before the court, on November 26, 2023, the father fetched his daughter from her grandmother’s house in Nonzwakazi in De Aar.
It was the girl’s 13th birthday, and he took her to his home with the promise of treating her on her special day. He then forcefully undressed his daughter and raped her. He kept her inside the house and went to sleep.
The child managed to climb out through a window and returned to her grandmother’s house, where she relayed exactly what her father had done to her.
The grandmother immediately called the police. The father evaded arrest on several occasions but was finally arrested on November 29, 2023, at his home after police received a tip-off from members of the community.
Once he appeared in court, the father’s bail was denied, and he was remanded in custody until the conclusion of his trial.
The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered his name to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
