KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a mother following the tragic stabbing of her two young children, aged nine months and four years.
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the incident occurred on Thursday when the children, aged nine months and four years old, were allegedly attacked inside the residence, in the KwaMathukuza area.
"Police have arrested a 26-year-old mother for the murder of two children," he said.
According to police, the children were discovered with fatal stab wounds and declared dead at the scene.
Officers opened a murder case and initiated an investigation to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident, including events inside the household before the attack.
Netshiunda confirmed that the suspect survived an apparent suicide attempt and is currently under medical care.
"The suspect is in hospital after attempting to kill herself. She will appear in court soon. The motive is unknown."
Police said the woman will appear in court once she has been discharged from hospital, while investigators continue gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details as inquiries into the motive and background of the incident remain ongoing.
