Two vehicles - a Toyota Corolla Cross and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - reported stolen in the Berea area in March and April, respectively, have been successfully recovered following a recent dramatic high-speed chase in Amanzimtoti.
According to a statement by Arrive Alive, three suspects were arrested after both stolen vehicles lost control and collided.
Police guards took the injured suspects to the hospital.
The recovered items included car-breaking implements, a signal jammer, multiple computer boxes, a firearm, and a police scanner. The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado had a tracking system.
"Acting swiftly, members initiated a coordinated ground search. The stolen vehicle (Toyota Land Cruiser Prado) was soon spotted by Amanzimtoti SAPS Crime Prevention, travelling alongside a Toyota Corolla Cross believed to be escorting it. A high-speed chase ensued.
"Members of ET Rapid Response TRT-Bidtrack, and Metro Police K9 joined the pursuit. During the chase, suspects opened fire on responding units. Members retaliated, and the pursuit continued under extreme conditions," said the statement.
"The chase came to an end when both the stolen Prado and the escort vehicle lost control and collided into each other."
Those involved in recovering the vehicles and stolen items included SAPS Umzinto K9, Kwamakhuta SAPS, CPI, SAPS Ethekweni District Task Team, Isipingo SAPS, ET Rapid Response TRT, Amanzimtoti SAPS Crime Prevention, and Metro Police K9.
"Outstanding teamwork and bravery displayed by all members involved. We are glad that no officers were injured during this shootout," said Arrive Alive.
