KwaZulu-Natal police are on the hunt for a group of armed suspects involved in a cash-in-transit robbery in Kranskop, where one suspect was found dead after allegedly injuring himself with explosives
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the suspect had allegedly injured himself while handling explosives during the robbery on Monday.
"He was found dead inside an abandoned vehicle along the gravel road near Tugela River, towards Nkandla on Tuesday," he said.
Police reported that an undisclosed amount of money was taken during the robbery, while three security guards were robbed of their firearms.
Four vehicles were also allegedly hijacked and used as getaway cars by the suspects.
The suspects reportedly fired shots towards a nearby police station during the incident, but no police officers or members of the public were injured.
Netshiunda confirmed that a large group of suspects was involved and that police had intensified their search.
“A manhunt for more suspects, who were believed to be at least 12 in number, is underway," he said.
Police have appealed to members of the public to assist with information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.
