A TEENAGER is set to appear in court after a newborn baby was tragically discovered in a pit toilet in Limpopo.
The 18-year-old teenager is expected to appear before the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, following the tragic discovery that unfolded late at night and ended with the infant's death days later.
Police said the ordeal began on Sunday, at about 9pm, when the suspect, who was heavily pregnant, went to sleep in the same house as the complainant.
During the night, she allegedly experienced complications, but by morning, she had vanished without explanation, triggering concern among those in the household.
"The following morning, the woman could not be located. A search was conducted, during which community members heard a baby crying from a pit toilet," a police spokesperson said.
"Upon inspection, a naked newborn baby was discovered inside."
The chilling cries prompted residents to investigate, leading to the horrifying discovery of the infant inside the toilet.
“With the assistance of community members, the baby was retrieved and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
“Unfortunately, the baby succumbed a few days later," the police said.
Authorities were alerted, and a case of murder was subsequently opened.
Investigators are now working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the birth and the events that led to the tragic death.
