The No Nonsense Road Traffic Intervention Team "saved" 26 pupils from an overloaded and unroadworthy minibus taxi in Park Rynie on Monday that posed a significant danger to their lives.

Among the youngest passengers was a three-year-old, the KZN Department of Transport said in a statement on its Facebook page.

The minibus taxi also had defective tyres.

RTI suspended and removed the taxi, charging the driver with transporting 26 passengers instead of 14.

Siboniso Duma, the KZN MEC for Transport, said that through operation #NenzaniLaEzweni, they succeeded in reducing road crashes and deaths over the festive season and Easter Weekend.

"RTI and Operation Shanela teams will continue to act decisively against irresponsible drivers," said Duma.
