THE community of Umhlatuzana mourns the tragic loss of Tahir Thaku, a father and healthcare professional, who was shot in an alleged hit.
His funeral, earlier this week, was attended by family and friends, reflecting on his life and the ongoing investigation into his murder.
Thaku, 44, was shot multiple times in his abdomen while he was seated in the back seat of his father’s car on Chatsworth Main Road, just past the Bayview off-ramp on Friday.
He was airlifted to hospital but died hours later due to his extensive injuries.
His funeral, held at the Clare Estate Crematorium on Tuesday, was an intimate ceremony attended by family and friends.
Thaku was a father of two and the practice manager at the Parlock Healthcare Centre, where his wife Dr Kirona Hansraj practiced as a general practitioner.
Mourners who spoke to the POST after his funeral said that Thaku was a kind and gentle person who loved his two children dearly.
They declined to comment further due to their concerns of jeopardising the murder investigation and “saying too much”.
A friend of Thaku’s told POST that he was still shocked about the killing, and said Thaku was a pleasant and well-respected person.
He claimed Thaku had been living in fear for years, as there had been “several hits on his life” since 2024.
He said he was praying that police arrest Thaku’s shooters and the mastermind behind his killing
Thaku was shot in front of his father Krish Thaku, 82, while they were travelling from Croftdene to their home in Kharwastan.
A report from Blue Security indicates that Krish’s vehicle had been struck from behind by another vehicle.
“Following the collision, unknown suspects approached, and a firearm was discharged, striking the victim.
“The injured victim had fled from the vehicle and ran to a nearby house for help,” the report read.
In 2024, after he survived two attacks on the same day - a hijacking and a brutal assault - Thaku told that POST that he feared for his life.
Investigations into his murder are ongoing.
