A woman in her twenties was killed Friday in an early-morning crash on the M4 Northern Freeway in Durban North.
Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, said crews responded to the scene at around 5am following reports of a serious head-on collision near the Broadway off-ramp.
“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage as the two badly damaged vehicles obstructed the roadway,” Jamieson said.
Both vehicles had two occupants each, all of whom sustained injuries in the crash.
Jamieson said the occupants of one vehicle were trapped in the wreckage with critical injuries.
“The passenger, a female believed to be in her twenties, sustained multiple injuries and unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for her and she was declared deceased on scene."
The driver of the same vehicle was injured but stabilised at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
The two occupants of the second vehicle sustained moderate injuries and were also taken to the hospital for further treatment.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
