ACTOR and filmmaker Kumaran Naidu, best known for his films Broken Promises and Run for your Life, died on Saturday following a long illness. He was 52.
Naidu, formerly from Chatsworth in Durban, resided in Gauteng.
In a statement, the Naidu family said his illness was "borne with courage and dignity".
"Mr Naidu was widely regarded as an iconic voice in film and television. He was the creative force behind acclaimed works including 'Broken Promises 1–5' and 'Run For Your Life', among others. His projects championed local narratives and brought Durban and South African experiences to national and international audiences.
"Colleagues remember him for his creative vision, mentorship of young artists, and unwavering commitment to authentic, socially conscious storytelling... He believed in local Indian cinema and blazed a trail for others to follow and create household names in the process."
The family said Naidu was known for revolutionising local Indian films.
Naidu is survived by his wife Fiona, sons Sudarshan and Maheshan and his three dogs Arri, Alexa and Kia. The family has extended its gratitude for the outpouring of support and to the medical teams who cared for him. They have asked for privacy as they mourn and requested that his legacy be honoured by continuing to support local film and the arts.
Details of a memorial service celebrating his life and work will be announced.
