A MINOR road accident escalated into a deadly shooting in Emmarentia, in Johannesburg,  leaving a husband dead and his wife critically injured, witnessed by their young children.

According to Suburban Control Centre, initial information indicated that the shooting followed an argument that ensued after a minor accident, on Sunday.

This resulted in a couple being shot, with the husband being declared dead at the scene, the source indicated. The wife was reportedly taken to the hospital in a critical condition.

The incident unfolded in front of the couple's two young children.

According to an eNCA report, onlookers said that the wife allegedly went to their vehicle first to remove a firearm and attempted to shoot the driver of the other vehicle.

This other driver allegedly acted in self-defence when he fired back, killing the woman's husband, eNCA reported.

Authorities reportedly arrested the driver.

Video footage of the incident circulating on social media shows an alleged witness pointing a cellphone camera at the alleged driver and saying, "He shot them dead. He shot them both dead."

He then focussed on the deceased man and the injured wife a few meters away, who was sitting on the road in a black outfit and headscarf.

A little girl, wearing a pink and a headscarf, was seated and crying next to her dad. She then walked away, screaming "papaji".

The man with the camera then put her in a car and told her that her mother would be okay, as she hysterically shouted for her father.

He instructed her to remain in the car while he got her brother.

As he walked toward the deceased man, the little boy pushed on his dad's chest, as if performing CPR. The camerman takes the hysterical boy, who has blood on his hands, tells him to sit in the car with his sister, and then gives the children's mother a phone to make a call.

The man believed to have shot them sits on the pavement, talking on a cellphone while onlookers gathered.

A firearm lay on the floor, and the cameraman told others, "He shot them both".

Private security guards appeared to have cordoned off the scene.

Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee said the videos of the incident circulating shortly after the deadly shooting, showed children witnessing their parents being shot.

"Sharing this is deeply irresponsible and harmful. It retraumatises families, violates dignity, and turns tragedy into content," he said.
