TWO men linked to the notorious Mechanics Gang have been sentenced to six life sentences for their roles in a drive-by shooting that claimed three lives in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Neavan du Preez and Jody Cloete were convicted in the High Court on multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, and firearms-related offences following a detailed investigation led by Warrant Officer Xolani Sokanyile.

A South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson said the court heard how the pair opened fire on April 2, 2021, at around 5pm, targeting Jonathan Bruintjies and Devidene Van Zyl as they made their way to board an Intercape bus at Perridgevale.

"During the attack, an innocent bystander, Mr Nyathi, a Zimbabwean national, was also struck by gunfire and tragically lost his life," she said.

Police later launched a high-speed chase after receiving intelligence on the suspects' vehicle, tracking them to Schauderville, where they were arrested, IOL reported.

Officers recovered two firearms and a hijacked vehicle at the scene, with further evidence linking them directly to the murders.

Acting District Commissioner of Nelson Mandela Bay, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, welcomed the outcome, hailing it as a major victory against violent gang activity.

"This sentence sends a clear and unequivocal message that those who engage in violent criminal acts, particularly gang-related killings, will face the full might of the law.

"The SAPS remains resolute in its commitment to dismantling gangs and ensuring that communities are safe," he said.
