Postbank urges SASSA Gold Card beneficiaries to switch to new Black Cards by August 31, 2026, to avoid disruption of grant payments. The transition is free and offers several benefits.

It announced on Thursday that the replacement process will officially begin on April 29, 2026, marking what it described as a critical phase in its ongoing card migration programme.

The bank said all beneficiaries must transition to the new cards by 31 August 2026, warning that Gold Cards will stop working after that date.

“Starting from this month, we are intensifying the final stages of the SASSA Gold Cards replacement process. This is a direct call to action for customers who have not yet migrated, please act as soon as possible and treat this invitation with the seriousness it deserves,” said Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thamsanqa Cele.

“The deadline will not be extended, and customers who miss it risk interruption to their grant payments.”

The migration forms part of a broader programme that began in September 2024, targeting beneficiaries who have not yet made the switch. Postbank emphasised that those already using Black Cards do not need to take any further action, as their cards remain valid.

According to the bank, the new cards come with several built-in benefits, including three free withdrawals per month, one free card replacement, and a free monthly statement.

It also stressed that accounts linked to the Black Cards are protected from unauthorised deductions and safeguard users’ personal information.

For those yet to migrate, the process is free and does not require any paperwork. Beneficiaries can collect their Black Cards at Postbank service points located inside major retailers such as Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores. A valid South African ID or temporary ID is required.

Postbank said the cards are activated immediately upon collection and that beneficiaries do not need to visit SASSA offices. Any remaining balance on existing Gold Cards will automatically transfer to the new card.

Beneficiaries are also allowed to collect their cards from any province, regardless of where their grant was originally approved.

Cele warned recipients not to delay the process, saying, “please act as soon as possible,” and reiterated that no extensions will be granted.

The bank has also urged beneficiaries to remain vigilant against fraud. It cautioned that any card not clearly marked “Postbank” on the front, or requiring forms to activate, is not legitimate.

To locate the nearest collection site, beneficiaries can dial *120*355# on their mobile phones, while enquiries can be directed to Postbank’s toll-free number.
