It is alleged that a 16-year-old boy with a history of behavioural challenges threw boiling tea on his 52-year-old mother following a confrontation in Verulam on Friday.

According to a statement by Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), the mother was "scalded".

"Members of Rusa were called out to the scene after receiving a request for assistance. On arrival, reaction officers were informed that a dispute had erupted between a 16 year old boy and his mother. During the confrontation, the teenager allegedly threw boiling tea over the woman.

"It was established that the teenager, a Grade 10 learner, has a history of behavioural challenges and had previously assaulted his mother during disputes. It was further reported that he had, on a prior occasion, attempted to set his mother’s room alight," said Rusa in a statement.

Rusa said the mother initially indicated her intention to pursue criminal charges but later declined, stating that she would seek the services of a social worker.
