A man was shot and killed in broad daylight in Overport in Durban prompting renewed fears about violent crime in urban areas

Emergency services were called to Crescent Street near East Street Park on Sunday following reports of gunfire.

On arrival, paramedics found a heavy police presence, with officers from the South African Police Service and metro police already at the scene.

A man believed to be in his thirties was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to assess his condition, he was declared dead on the scene.

It is understood that a second victim, who was also wounded during the shooting, was taken to the hospital by private transport before emergency crews arrived.

The extent of that person’s injuries has not been confirmed.

The area was cordoned off for several hours as investigators combed the scene.

Numerous spent bullet casings were recovered from the roadway, pointing to a sustained exchange of gunfire.

A passing motorist’s vehicle was also caught in the crossfire and damaged during the incident, though no additional injuries have been reported.

Police have yet to confirm a motive, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear.

Detectives are expected to review evidence gathered at the scene and interview witnesses as part of an ongoing investigation.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as efforts continue to trace those responsible.
