The family of a tow truck driver is demanding justice after he was gunned down while parked along the Phoenix Highway on Friday.

Sanrino Tyrique Pillay, 22, of Phoenix, was allegedly shot by two suspects while seated in a tow truck. He died at the scene.

A relative, who declined to be named, said they were uncertain of the motive.

“We don’t know the reason behind his killing, but all we want is justice to be served. Whoever is behind this needs to be caught.”

The relative said Pillay, who had been working in the industry for a few years, was his family’s sole-breadwinner.

“As the youngest and only son, his goal was to take care of his parents and siblings. He was hardworking. But above all, he was a humble, down-to-earth, and respectful young man. Sanrino never raised his voice. He was also family-oriented, and the bond he shared with us meant the world to him. His passing was tragic and left us all heartbroken.”

Gareth Naidoo, spokesperson for KZN VIP, said according to initial reports, two unidentified male suspects approached the tow truck and opened fire.

“They thereafter fled on foot. KZN VIP Medics, together with security teams, responded to the scene.”

Naidoo said that upon arrival, emergency personnel found Pillay seated in the driver’s seat.

"He was declared deceased on the scene. Members of the South African Police Service attended the scene and launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.”

Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Magwaza, a provincial police spokesperson, said a case of murder was being investigated.

“The motive of the attack is yet to be established and no suspects have been arrested.”
