Taking a bold step in the fight against corruption, Public Interest SA formally lodging a criminal complaint against Advocate Andrea Johnson, the head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The complaint was registered with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation at its Pretoria headquarters, citing perceived breaches of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

According to the organisation, the complaint stems from Johnson’s admitted participation, while serving in the former Directorate for Special Operations, in an interview and selection process involving her spouse, who was later appointed.

Public Interest SA alleges that the conduct constitutes a prima facie case of corruption, involving the abuse of public office to benefit a related party.

The organisation said individuals leading critical public institutions, particularly within IDAC, are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, given their role in maintaining public confidence in the justice system.

Public Interest SA noted that the criminal complaint does not replace its earlier engagement with the NPA and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, following a formal complaint submitted in December 2025. It said it is still awaiting a substantive progress report on that process.

The group added that it reserves the right to supplement the complaint or lay additional charges should further evidence emerge.

It stressed that the filing of a criminal complaint does not amount to a finding of guilt, but is intended to ensure the matter is independently investigated by law enforcement authorities.

Public Interest SA said it will not be conducting media interviews or further public commentary at this stage, citing the need to avoid influencing the investigative process.
