Grief and anger engulf the community of Amahlongwa in KwaZulu-Natal following the rape and murder of six-year-old Snesihle Lonwabo Khathi, allegedly at the hands of her father.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Dawn Gounden, of Renegades Search & Rescue, said the organisation expressed deep sadness and outrage following the death of Snesihle on April 16.

The Grade 1 pupil, described by neighbours as cheerful and full of life, had not gone to school that day after reportedly becoming unwell at home.

The child was rushed to the hospital for medical attention, but would not come back.

Police later confirmed that the young girl had suffered serious injuries, prompting an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed the arrest of the suspect in the rape and murder.

"Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for cases of rape and murder."

The news sent shockwaves through the small community, where residents struggled to come to terms with the brutality of the allegations.

As investigators worked to piece together what happened, support poured in for the grieving family. Community members gathered, some in tears, others in disbelief, remembering a child who loved school.

The legal process has now begun, with the matter drawing growing public attention, Magwaza confirmed.

"The suspect, Sihle Ntshiza, appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court on Monday and he was remanded in custody until Wednesday, May 6 for a bail application."

The tragedy has also reignited urgent calls for stronger protection of children.

Gounden appealed for unity and vigilance.

"Your child is my child. Together we must safeguard the future of our children."

For Amahlongwa, the loss of little Snesihle has left a deep wound.

Her classroom seat is now empty, her laughter silenced, and a community that once watched her grow is now united in grief, and in the hope that justice will follow.
