Police are investigating a kidnapping case after a woman was lured through an online platform and held for ransom.

Various law enforcement agencies rescued her in Umlazi on Tuesday.

Colonel Boysie Zungu, spokesperson for the Durban Metropolitan Police Service (DMPS),  said the woman was lured by her alleged kidnappers to meet in Isipingo and was then taken to Umlazi.

He said the suspects demanded a ransom of R50,000 from her family and issued multiple threats to harm the woman.

“Proof of life was confirmed during ongoing communication with the victim’s family. An urgent multi-disciplinary response was activated, including the SAPS Hostage and Crisis Negotiation Team, Crime Intelligence, and the DMPS K9 Unit.

“Information led authorities to the Umlazi area, where a rapid response operation was executed. Upon arrival, the suspects fled the scene, and members successfully located and rescued the victim near an abandoned building."

Zungu said the victim sustained injuries and received medical attention.

He said no ransom was paid and that preliminary information indicated that five suspects were involved.

“Investigations are ongoing, and a suspect has already been identified. This successful operation highlights the importance of coordinated law enforcement efforts in ensuring public safety. All role players are commended for their swift and professional response.”

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a provincial police spokesperson, confirmed police are investigating a case of kidnapping.

Sholeen Brijmohan, who runs the Isipingo Women’s Awareness Group and its social media pages, said there was an urgent need for digital safety awareness.

“This incident serves as a serious reminder of the risks linked to online interactions and social media engagement.”

Brijmohan said online platforms are increasingly being used to manipulate and lure victims, making awareness and education essential for prevention.

“Women and young people are often targeted through online manipulation. Families are urged to maintain open conversations about online risks. Furthermore, never share personal details online and avoid any meetings with strangers first encountered on social media.

“Community awareness, responsible online behaviour, and proactive communication are key to preventing similar incidents. Safety begins with vigilance,” she said.
