A woman was burnt with melted plastic before being robbed and tied with rope during a house robbery in Lotusville, Verulam, on Sunday night.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), the woman's husband said they were asleep when they heard someone knock at the door just after 9pm.

"He opened the door believing it was another tenant on the property. He reported that two armed perpetrators forced their way into the room and began assaulting both him and his wife while demanding valuables," said Rusa in a statement.

The men melted plastic and used it to burn the wife in an attempt to force her to disclose the location of money, added Rusa.

The rope used to tie the couple.

The robbers took two cellphones, a TV, radio and about R2,000 cash.

The couple were then tied with rope and locked in their room.

Rusa said robbers then went to anther room where they assaulted a male family member.

"He was assaulted and robbed of his bank card, and an amount exceeding R3,000 was withdrawn after he was forced to provide his PIN. He was also restrained before the suspects fled the scene."

It is believed the suspects gained entry through a rear window that had been damaged four days earlier.

"Their mode of escape is unknown. All the victims sustained injuries in the attack."
