An early morning fire at Chatsmed Hospital's paediatric ward led to the evacuation of six children and staff, with no injuries reported.

Emergency services responded promptly to ensure safety.

“We received multiple calls from frantic patients notifying us of the fire, which started at the paediatric ward of the hospital, just after 4am.

“The fire was allegedly caused due to an electrical fault,” said Claude Subramodey, spokesperson for Amawele Emergency Services.

He said when paramedics got to the hospital, they assisted in evacuating six children who were admitted to the paediatric ward.

“The nursing and administrative staff were also safely evacuated. There were no injuries reported,” he added.

Subramodey said the children were moved to the hospital’s trauma unit and were shaken from the experience.
