Questions raised over R900 matric ball ticket

A furious parent has launched a scathing attack on a school after this year's matric ball, claiming learners were left 'cheated' out of a milestone night despite families paying R900 per ticket for the event.
Irish-lee Petersen, a concerned parent, said the situation has left many families questioning how the money was spent and whether proper planning was done for one of the most important milestones in a young person's school life.
"We need to talk about the matric ball held this year," she said on Facebook.
According to Petersen, parents and pupils of Schoonspruit Sekonder made significant financial sacrifices in good faith, expecting a well-organised celebration that reflected the significance of the occasion.
Instead, she claimed, the catering fell far short of expectations.
"Parents and learners paid R900 per ticket, a huge amount for most families who sacrificed and saved for months so their children could have one special, memorable night," she said. "That trust was placed in the school to deliver an experience worthy of a once-in-a-lifetime milestone."
However, what was served on the night has sparked outrage among those who attended.
Petersen described the meal as "chicken strips and a small portion of chips", which she says was unacceptable given the cost.
The disappointment, she added, was not just about food but about what the event represented to matric learners who had completed 12 years of schooling.
"That is not acceptable. It is a disgrace. Our children deserve better. They deserve a matric ball that reflects dignity, effort, and pride, not one that cuts corners while charging premium prices."
Petersen said many learners left feeling undervalued and let down on a night that was meant to celebrate their achievements and friendships.
She also raised concerns about transparency, with parents now questioning how funds were allocated.
Due to the backlash, the school has responded. "Please take note of an urgent parent meeting that will take on Monday at 6pm in the school hall."
