Two people were critically injured when a tree fell on them during a picnic at Midmar Dam in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Sunday.
Midlands EMS said strong winds caused a tree to fall onto visitors at the popular dam, IOL reported.
"The Midlands EMS control room received multiple emergency calls reporting an incident at Midmar Dam, where strong winds caused a tree to fall onto visitors.
Several Midlands EMS ambulances were dispatched to the scene, along with the specialised rescue vehicle to assist with complex extrication," Midlands EMS said in a statement.
On arrival, paramedics found two people in critical condition and several others with minor injuries.
"Midlands EMS rescue medics and paramedics worked together to stabilize the critically injured using advanced trauma care before transporting them to a nearby specialist hospital."
"Patients with minor injuries were treated on-site and later transferred for further evaluation," said Midlands EMS.
Police and other authorities were at the scene to secure the area and assist with crowd management.
