Two suspects linked to a viral video showcasing firearms have been arrested by the SAPS, leading to the seizure of unlicensed weapons and the recovery of a hijacked vehicle

The arrests follow the circulation of a video showing women allegedly handling firearms recklessly and negligently, prompting Gauteng Crime Intelligence to launch an intensive tracing operation.

Police tracked the suspects to Tembisa, Gauteng, where the two men, aged 21 and 34, were arrested.

Police say the firearms seen in the viral clip were confiscated, and preliminary investigations have revealed that the weapons were unlicensed.

“During the operation, the suspects were also found in possession of a hijacked vehicle,” police confirmed.

The suspects now face charges relating to the contravention of the Firearms Control Act, illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.

Investigations are continuing as police work to trace the women seen in the video allegedly handling the firearms.

The Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, praised officers involved in the operation for acting swiftly.

“The arrests send a strong warning that the reckless handling and display of firearms will not be tolerated and that police will act decisively against those who break the law.”

Police also issued a warning to the public over the dangerous handling and public display of firearms.

“Police further warn members of the public against the reckless handling and display of firearms, as such conduct endangers lives and constitutes a serious criminal offence,” Police added.

The two suspects are expected to appear before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court next week as investigations continue.
