A video circulating on social media captured the tragic moment a Johannesburg youngster allegedly lost control of his BMW M3, hit a tree and the car erupted into flames.
The CCTV footage, which has since gone viral, shows Uzair Sheik's vehicle skidding across the road on the morning of May 17 before hitting a tree on Pansy Street in Winchester Hills, Johannesburg.
The impact caused the car to burst into flames.
Community leaders have since expressed condolences to the family while again raising concerns about road safety.
Shane Thavar, of the Mondeor Sector 2 Community Policing Forum (CPF), said the tragedy served as a reminder for road users to exercise caution behind the wheel.
“I am aware of the accident but do not know the details. In general, we encourage young people to adhere to the speed limit. It is unfortunate what happened to the young man and my condolences go out to his family during this difficult time,” said Thavar.
“We do not often have speeding issues in our area but we know that speeding is a problem for both young and older people. We always hope that young people stay safe on the roads. We often launch campaigns together with the police to teach road safety and encourage people to drive safely,” he added.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with many social media users expressing shock at the severity of the crash and calling for greater awareness around responsible driving.
