The Durban community is mourning the loss of 84-year-old Manilal Patel, the founder of the iconic Grey Street Casbah establishment, Patels. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many who knew him.

Widely regarded as the heart and soul behind the well-known restaurant, Patel built more than just a successful business, he created a place of warmth, tradition and togetherness that became a landmark in Durban’s historic Grey Street precinct.

Patel's Vegetarian Refreshment Room is one of Durban's oldest surviving culinary landmarks.

Opened in the heart of the Durban Central Business District (CBD) in 1932, the eatery has been serving traditional, highly affordable vegetarian curries and bunny chows for nearly a century.

Family, friends, patrons and members of the broader community described him as a man whose passion for food and genuine love for people defined his life’s work. His dedication to hospitality and his welcoming nature ensured that every customer who walked through the doors of Patels felt like family.
