Ashnie Dookie cannot forget watching her partner of seven years lying injured and bleeding from his head and ear after an alleged hit-and-run incident in Phoenix on May 9.

Looking at him on the ground, she prayed for his full recovery. But he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

Terrance Moonsamy, 36, of Trenance Manor, sustained head injuries after a vehicle allegedly struck him while he was crossing the road in Highmanor Grove. The driver allegedly fled the scene.

Dookie said she was at home when she learned that Moonsamy, a sales agent at a call-centre, had been hit by a vehicle.

“Terrance had left home to visit a friend. Not long after, around 5pm, a local child came to our home, which was near where Terrance was knocked down, and told me what happened.

“When I got to the road, I saw him lying on the ground. Blood poured from his head and ears. Everyone tried to call for an ambulance, but for more than three hours he was just laying there. We eventually arranged to take him in a private car to the Unit 10 Clinic.

“I used a pillow to keep his head up and covered him with a sheet. When we got to the clinic, the doctor said he was in a critical condition and needed to be taken to Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital. A state ambulance was arranged.

“When we arrived, they performed a CT Scan and subsequently stated he had extensive head injuries, requiring transfer to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. He underwent an operation, which was a success,” she said.

Dookie said Moonsamy was thereafter transferred back to Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital.

“We thought he would make a full recovery. During my daily visits, he squeezed my hand to let me know he would be okay. But when I visited him on Monday, his hands were cold. He did not look well. Later that evening, his niece visited him and called me to say she felt something was wrong and that I should go to the hospital. When I arrived, he had already passed on.”

She said the family was devastated and wanted the person responsible to be held accountable.

“They did not even have the decency to stop and assist. The driver was going so fast that one of his side mirrors broke off his vehicle when he hit Terrance.”

Dookie said Moonsamy often made people laugh and was “the best partner”.

“He never complained about helping me, whether it was cooking or cleaning. He was always by my side. We are now relying on the community to help us get justice for him. We are calling for any witnesses or anyone that has video footage to come forward.”

Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, a provincial police spokesperson, said police have opened an inquest docket for investigation.

“The man, who sustained head injuries, was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. The matter was reported in KwaMashu police station and the docket was transferred to Phoenix police station.”
