AT JUST 10 years old, Preyaav Kashiv Singh impressively raised R10,000 for charity by completing the challenging Oceans 8 Swim, showcasing his bravery and dedication to helping others.

The annual charity-driven ocean event was held at Durban's Vetch’s Beach at the weekend.

Preyaav, who is from Brindhaven in Verulam, and a member of the Current Aquatics swimming club, said the event features 1, 4, 8, and 16-mile distances.

He said participants had to swim 2 miles each day to complete the 4-mile challenge.

“Over the two days, I completed 4 miles (6.4 kilometres) in the ocean. When I was swimming I felt really brave. I was not scared and just wanted to beat my previous times. There were also many dolphins which was exciting to see.

“I felt very happy when I finished. It was also the support from family, coaches, and community that pushed me through each mile,” he said.

The Grade 5 pupil at Durban North Primary School, said participants were also required to raise funds for 14 charitable organisations.

These included, among others, the Pietermaritzburg Children's Home,Umduduzi Hospice Care for Children,  Rise Against Hunger Africa  and Nazareth Care - Caring for the Aged.

“I wanted to help people while doing something I love.”

Some of Preyaav’s recent open water swims, included participating in the Capital K Open Water Swim, Miidmar Mile and a 10.5 km relay swim from Miller's Point to Fish Hoek Beach in Cape Town.

Preyaav added that he was now looking forward  to participating in the annual Breathe World Ocean Day Swim set to take place at the Durban Beach Club on June 6.

Preasha Singh, his mother said: “I am extremely proud of my son. I am so happy that he is making a difference in the lives of others at a young age. Preyaav’s achievement is also a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to making an impact. Through his dedication and kindness, he has inspired those around him and brought hope to many in need.”

Yaveer Singh, his father added: “I am incredibly proud of Preyaav. His strength, courage and determination inspire me.”
